People abuse substances such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco for varied and complicated reasons, but it is clear that our society pays a significant cost. The toll for this abuse can be seen in our hospitals and emergency departments through direct damage to health by substance abuse and its link to physical trauma. Jails and prisons tally daily the strong connection between crime and drug dependence and abuse.

We have seen the openness of the American mainstream approach to addiction treatment, which has intimidated African immigrants, thereby reinforcing their avoidance and denial of their addiction problem.  We are sensitive to the western culture and will use the best approach possible to incorporate African sensitivity to the western style of treatment. Because of that, we deploy discrete, culturally sensitive methods to support our clients without exposing them to public opinion. We aimed to provide immigrant families with the support that integrates the best of the western and the African traditions and cultures.
